The director of the Vatican archives is murdered on Christmas Eve when the killer cuts off a piece of skin from his back and leaves a symbol behind. Italy's Director of State Security enlists the help of symbolist Brancusin, who is traveling in Rome, to solve the case, and the curator's adopted granddaughter arrives at the scene of the murder when she hears about it. Fortunately, she finds the key left behind by the curator.
